In Tune: Selling Your Music On iTunes
Gone are the days when musicians would send demos or mixtapes to studios in order to get a record deal.
With so many digital platforms available, streaming or purchasing albums by our favorite artists has never been easier!
With Apple selling more than 50% of online music, iTunes has opened the gates of opportunity for millions of aspiring musicians across the world.
But that doesn’t mean just about anyone can make it. Besides talent, you need to take the right measures if you want to climb the ranks and top the charts!
Here’s what you can do:
Create a Stellar Track and Artwork
This is a no-brainer, but so many artists make the mistake of focusing only on promoting their existing work. If you offer your audience something that’s years old, it can be pretty hit or miss.
Offer them your latest work so they can see how much you’ve improved. Experiment with different styles. Find what works best for you. Then offer your listeners something unforgettable that will leave them floored.
Also, make sure to focus on the album art. So many artists make the mistake of focusing only on the content. If your album cover looks great, your listeners will be compelled to click on the album.
Find an Aggregator
Selling music on iTunes is extremely hard if you don’t employ an aggregator. An aggregator is a company that can negotiate on your behalf with Apple.
If you choose not to hire one, your music can still go on iTunes if:
- You’ve released 20 albums previously
- You have an International Standard Recording Code (ISRC) and Universal Product Code (UPC) for every song
- Your Mac is running OS X 10.5.8 or a higher version
Apple has a list of aggregators that you can check out.
Most aggregators charge a fee that can range from $9 per single to $29 per album (this is annual).
Some aggregators charge a fee after your music has made the cut. so make sure to go through all the guidelines before you make your decision. It can take a week or more for aggregators to put your album on iTunes.
